Is it Safe to Access Online Banking Using a Proxy?

Posted by Vectro 21 February 2010

Some people access their online banking using a proxy thinking this adds security to their browsing. One problem with public proxies is that you never know if your activity is being watched or logged. The only way around this is to use a trusted anonymity service. Furthermore, most banks use SSL encryption and authentication to protect you. Some even use ‘secret questions’ during the login process to ensure that you are the one logging in and not someone who stole your password. When access your finances on the web, make sure that you see a padlock icon in your browser. This indicates that they use SSL. If you get a warning about an invalid or expired certificate, it may be a ‘clone’ web site attempting to trick you into logging in. If this happens, contact customer service.
